Keep Your Pets Away from These Substances

Fort Worth Animal Clinic Provides Advice on Preventing Pet Poisonings

vterinary_care_med.jpgYou turn away from your dog or cat for just a minute and they are into something they shouldn't be touching--or eating. Litsey Animal Hospital in Forth Worth understands this and has an emergency animal vet clinic open seven days a week just for these unexpected situations.

Common Household Items that Are Poisonous to Pets

It's important to be aware of what common household substances can be toxic to your pet. Our veterinarian and staff have compiled a list of substances that you should be aware of and keep away from your pets. One of the more common animal poisons is human medications, especially over-the-counter pain killers, ADHD medications and anti-depressants. Insecticides, such as flea bombs and ant sprays and rodenticides, such as mice bait can also be poisonous if ingested by your pet. People foods like chocolate, raisins, onions and grapes should never be given or allowed within reach of your dog or cat as these are toxic to their systems. Plants--both potted and cut as well as herbicides can cause harm to your pet as well. Many toxic substances are attractive to pets because they taste sweet or salty. Make sure to keep poisonous materials in a secure cabinet away from your pet.

This is just a short list of toxic items. If you have a question about a specific plant or type of people food, please ask Dr. Litsey or one of our knowledgeable staff. As a general rule, only dog or cat specific foods or treats should be given to your dog or cat.

What to Do in a Pet Emergency

If you suspect that your dog or cat has ingested something poisonous, don't wait! Take him or her to an emergency animal clinic immediately. It's a good idea to have a list of emergency veterinary hospitals at the ready just in case you ever need one. Our emergency pet hospital is open during regular business hours, seven days a week and prepared to handle pet emergencies. We also make referrals to Fort Worth-area, after-hours veterinary hospitals if needed.

When you arrive at the clinic, tell our veterinarian what you suspect your pet ingested. If possible, bring a sample of the substance with you to the clinic.

What steps do you take to ensure that your dog or cat does not have access to anything they shouldn’t?

Benefits of Boarding Your Pet at Our Animal Vet Clinic

pets_med.jpgWhen you make plans to travel, we know that it is very important that you find a safe and reliable place for your pet to stay. Many pet owners choose to leave their pets with friends or family, which may not be the best arrangement for your animal. You do not want your pet to become an inconvenience to a friend or relative. Many times, when this happens, the animal does not receive enough care and attention in your absence.

Consider making a reservation to have your pet stay at our Litsey Animal Hospital boarding facility. We will be able to provide your animal with the best possible care while you are away because we know your pet and are familiar with his or her medical history. In the unlikely event that your animal gets sick, our emergency pet hospital has everything in place to handle any urgent care situation. While your pet relaxes in our clean, comfortable and well-maintained boarding facility, he or she will be frequently monitored by our attentive staff and caring Fort Worth veterinarian

Important Considerations Prior to Boarding Your Pet at Our Veterinary Hospital

There are several things you should remember prior to boarding your pet at our emergency animal clinic and animal hospital. Be sure to book your reservation with us in advance of your departure day to ensure that we will have an open boarding spot for your dog or cat.
We offer three affordable boarding packages for dogs that include walks, food, cleaning and treats. Our cat boarding package allows you to choose to treat your pet to the cat food offered at our animal vet clinic or bring their own food.
Also, be sure that your pet’s vaccinations have been updated within the previous 12 months by a licensed veterinarian. The Bordetella vaccine should be updated every six months. See our Pet Boarding Policy page for more information.
